$5,000 to support programs, projects & activities that 1) assist those living in the Garfield, Bloomfield, & Friendship neighborhoods facing challenging circumstances & 2) capitalize on opportunities to improve the physical & economic environment of the larger community. Since 1975, the BGC has sought a better future for all who call our community “home”.

The Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation (BGC) exists to improve the quality of life for all in Garfield and surrounding neighborhoods through active community engagement. Community-based and board-driven, one of the BGC’s main goals is to get as many people in the community as possible to participate in the efforts aimed at physical revitalization, an improved economy and strengthened social well-being.

Bach Choir of Pittsburgh

Bach Choir of Pittsburgh

$5,000 to support the Bach Choir’s 85th season, Dreams and Nightmares, which will explore musical settings of literary works. Their third concert – Mary Shelley: Frankenstein Re-imagined – will premiere a newly-commissioned work by local composer Ben Opie in a jazz, funk, hip-hop style. The Bach Choir will perform the work as sound-track to the 1931 Frankenstein film.

The Bach Choir of Pittsburgh is dedicated to inspiring the highest levels of artistic excellence among its members and to building enthusiasm for choral performance in audiences across the Southwestern Pennsylvania region. We do this through:

$10,000 to Resources for Human Development to support Put People First! PA’s Nonviolent Medicaid Army program in Southwestern Pennsylvania, a base-building and leadership development initiative to help grow PPF’s existing local Healthcare Rights Committees and establish new ones, and to develop the leadership of volunteer members.

Put People First! PA gives voice to everyday people who are struggling to meet basic needs — things like education, housing, health care, jobs at living wages, food, and a healthy environment.

Alia Musica Pittsburgh is the fiscal sponsor for Afro Yaqui Music Collective, a postcolonial big band committed to a decolonized music and theater practice. The emphasis on jazz, under-recognized as having a vibrant cultural life on the Mexico-U.S. border, aligns with the collective’s goals of using music as a bridge between communities in the service of dismantling apartheid.
